DHARAMSALA

Dharamshala (also Dharamsala) is the district headquarters of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Kangra District was part of the British province of Punjab. The administrative headquarters of the district were initially at Kangra but were moved to Dharamshala in 1855. Dharamshala is 18 km (11 mi) from Kangra. In common Hindi usage, the word Dharamshala refers to a shelter or rest house for spiritual pilgrims.

Dharamshala has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. On 19 January 2017, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh declared Dharamshala as the second capital of Himachal Pradesh state, making Himachal Pradesh the third state of India with two capitals after Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra.

Dharamsala is separated as upper and lower divisions with different altitudes. The lower division is the Dharamsala town itself. whereas, the upper-division is located 3km away and popularly known as Mcleodganj(Famed as the holy residence of the Dalai Lama and Tibetans in exile). Dharamshala has an average elevation of 1,457 meters (4,780 ft), covering an area of almost 8.51 km2 (3.29 sq mi).

 

 This place is also famous for its Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium (2003), which offers opportunities to the youth of the state to prepare for their future in the game.

Dharamshala also has several tea gardens which are prominently at Sheela Chowk that extend upwards towards Khaniyara. The other tea gardens are at Kunal Pathri and Palampur in district Kangra. The tea is known as Dharamsala or Kangra tea is very popular across India and the rest of the world. Traditionally known for Kangra green tea, Dharamshala now produces all teas including black tea, green tea, oolong tea, and white teas, in addition to the popular Kashmiri Kahwa and Masala Chai.

 

TRANSPORT:-

Buses of all classes (deluxe, air-conditioned, and regular) ply daily between Dharamshala and major cities such as Chandigarh, Delhi, and Shimla through NH 154 and NH 503.

Dharamshala town is reached by Kangra Gaggal Airport codes|DHM|VIGG, about 12 km to the town's south and about 10 km north of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh town. To reach Dharamshala by train, one has to reach Kangra, Himachal Pradesh town by Kangra Valley Railway line from Pathankot 94 km away from Una Himachal station i.e. 120 km from Dharamshala and then take a bus or a taxi.

Pathankot is a broad gauge railway head. There is another railway line from Pathankot to Jogindernagar, apart of the Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh, which is a narrow-gauge line. The nearest station to Dharamshala on this line is Chamunda Marg, half an hour away, where a Shaktipitha is; the town is well connected by road to other parts of the country.

 

Places to visit near Dharamsala:-



1) McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj was named after Sir Donald Friell McLeod, a Lieutenant Governor of Punjab; the suffix ganj is a common Persian word used for "neighborhood". Travel by bus is the most common medium of transport used by people. Mcleod Ganj is about 9km from Dharamshala and around 485km from Delhi. It takes about 10-11 hours of journey to reach Mcleod Ganj from Delhi via a bus, and there is regular service available with more than 4-5 buses plying every day on the route. The most important Buddhist site in the town is Tsuglagkhang or Tsuglag Khang, the Dalai Lama's temple.

It has statues of Shakyamuni, Avalokiteśvara, and a statue of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). This place can free you from all your tension. The environment of place binds you, energies of mantra chanting by pilgrims can recharge you with a lot of energy. This place has an unknown kind of attraction and you will be shocked how hundreds of refugees came to India by order of their guru Dalai lama. The fate in god is more important than anything else,  which can be felt in this temple.



                                                

 

2) Bhagsunath

  Bhagsu / Bhaksu (also known as Bhagsunag or Bhagsunath) is a village near Mcleodganj in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Popular for a waterfall named "Bhagsu waterfall" and an ancient temple(5000 years old), named "Bhagsunag temple". Tourists need to hike to reach the waterfall. From a distance, it resembles a long white silk sheet which is split in two as it approaches the base. It lies in close proximity to Mcleodganj and the Bhagsunag Temple. It is best to visit the waterfall from July to September.

The experience of bhasunath is amazing. The cold water of waterfall in the month of April, makes your all body severing, but it is a different kind of experience which everyone should take once in their life. The time was perfect (around 9:00 in the morning).                                                                                                                               

3) Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium

The stadium served as the home ground for the Himachal Pradesh cricket team for Ranji Trophy matches and other domestic matches. The stadium also hosted some IPL matches as a home stadium for Kings XI Punjab. The first One Day International (ODI) at this stadium was played between India and England on 27 January 2013. England won the match by 7 wickets. The first Test at this stadium was played between India and Australia from 25–29 March 2017. The picturesque venue is unique in India as it is situated at an altitude of 1,457 m above the sea level and has the snow-capped Himalayan mountains in the background.

Activities can be done in Dharamsala:-


1) TREKKING

  The trekking is the main sport in Dharamsala, it has many routes to trek. It is your choice which way and how far    you want to go.

   The trekking trails that lead trekkers to Chamba from Dharamsala are:-

·         Toral Pass (4575m) which begins from Tang Narwana (1150m) that is nearly 10 km from Dharamshala.

·         Across Bhimghasutri Pass (4580m) via near-vertical rocky ascents, steep cliffs, and dangerous gorges. This is a highly difficult level trek and takes around six days to complete.

·         Dharamshala—Bleni Pass (3710m) – Dunali. Compared to other trekking trails, this one is much easier and takes around four or five days to complete. The trek leads through alpine pastures, woods, and streams, before ending at Dunali, on the Chamba road.

·         Dharamshala is an ideal destination for rock climbing enthusiasts. One can go rock climbing over the ridges of the Dhauladhar range.

·         Kareri Lake (near Kareri village) is also a famous trekking destination for travelers.



·         Triund-Thatri-Trek (TTT) a circular trek for two nights and three days around Dharamshala. The first day involves walking up to Triund and staying for a night, and the second day walks to a village called Thatri and stays overnight at Camp Himalayan Nest. The third day after walking for a couple of hours, walkers reach to broadhead near Dharamshala.
